Negroni Week: My Favorite Cocktail Recipes and an Exclusive Etta + Billie Product!

image from Imbibe

When I think of ordering a Negroni, my mind is usually telling me it’s time to sit and relax. Take a load off, savor the moment, which is hard to do with a 1-year old baby boy!
The Negroni is the perfect cocktail for these kinds of moods. They’re a bit bitter, strong, and subtly sweet. For one our favorite weeks at Etta + Billie, Negroni Week, I wanted to share some of the most interesting ways you can enjoy this iconic cocktail, where to get them, and also share some exciting E+B news!

Classic Negroni: Junior. Mission, SF

Exterior of Junior in the Mission District of San Francisco

Located just a hop and a skip from my house, Junior is my favorite local spot to sit n’ think for a while with a good, herbaceous Negroni. The interior is beautiful, the colors are contemplative, which makes for the perfect environment. Here are the ingredients for the Classic recipe:

Classic Negroni
1 oz. Gin (my favorite is St. George’s!)
1 oz. Sweet Vermouth
1 oz. Campari
Tools: mixing glass, barspoon, strainer
Glass: Rocks Glass
Garnish: Orange Peel
Combine all ingredients and stir with ice. Strain into an ice-filled glass and garnish.

Kingston Negroni: Outerlands, Outer Sunset, SF

If you take the N-line outbound to the beach, through layers of fog, you’ll find this wonderful gem of a restaurant called Outerlands. Although they’re known for many things (like their amazing grilled cheese!), the bartenders introduced me to the Kingston Negroni, and now it’s my favorite place to get it. Using Jamaican rum instead of gin, I was pleasantly surprised by the rich, spicy combination. Definitely the kind of drink you want to have with a friend, savoring all the flavors of your Negroni and sharing deep conversation. Here are the ingredients for the Kingston Negroni recipe:

Kingston Negroni
1 oz. Jamaican rum (my favorite is Smith and Cross!)
1 oz. sweet vermouth
1 oz Campari
Tools: mixing glass, barspoon, strainer
Glass: rocks
Garnish: orange peel
Combine all ingredients and stir with ice. Strain into an ice-filled glass and garnish.

Mezcal Negroni: Hello Stranger, Uptown Oakland

Interior of Oakland's Hello Stranger in the Uptown District. a Large L-shaped bar with cool lighting and plenty of space to move around

Across the bridge, Hello Stranger is my favorite Uptown bar for a Negroni. On the weekends this place gets busy, but during the week you can always count on a mellow scene with great music. Honestly, what brought me to this place was word of their original creation: the Hell’s Belles Negroni. With earthy mezcal, herbaceous rosemary (they even torch the rosemary sprig!) this version surprised me in the best way. It’s an experience you must check out if you’re in Oakland. Here are the ingredients for the
Mezcal Negroni:

Hell’s Belles
1 ¼ oz. mezcal (Hello Stranger uses Wahaka espadín)
1 ½ oz. Cocchi Americano Rosa
½ oz. Campari
Tools: barspoon, strainer
Glass: Old Fashioned
Garnish: grapefruit twist, rosemary sprig
Stir all the ingredients with ice to chill, then strain into an ice-filled glass. Twist a piece of grapefruit peel over the drink, then pierce the twist with a rosemary sprig and use as garnish. (Optional: Use a kitchen torch to flame the rosemary sprig until it smokes; extinguish the flame before serving.)

New Etta + Billie product: Negroni Soap!

Behind the Counter: Creation of E+B Body Scrubs

You may know that Etta + Billie makes all their skincare products with natural ingredients. (No weird stuff like artificial colors and scents.) But did you know that we also use sustainable practices and recyclable packaging?

For example, take our amazing line of body scrubs: 100% natural ingredients, gentle on skin and the environment, made in the USA, and made using local goods, all which leaves your skin glowing, hydrated, and smells delectable.

Mixing up the oils and scent for sea salt body scrub
Etta + Billie Behind the Scenes Mint Coffee Sea Salt Body Scrub
Etta + Billie Sea Salt Body Scrubs

Here’s how we do it:

  1. Start with the most delicious natural ingredients.
  2. Carefully weigh and melt our butters and sea salt.
  3. After butters are melted, we had our essential oils and additives (like coffee!).
  4. SO MUCH MIXING. Each batch is mixed by hand. You get some serious muscles after a few weeks!
  5. Once thoroughly blended, we ladle our mixture into molds.
  6. The scrubs sit for at least 20 hours so they will harden up.
  7. Unmold, wrap in beautiful gold foil (also happens to be recyclable!).
  8. Handwrite our batch numbers on our boxes, pop the scrubs in and voila!

Ingredient Spotlight: Cocoa Butter!

Heath and chocolate! What else do you need?

Most of our products have the delectable cocoa butter in it, loved for its smooth texture, sweet fragrance, moisturizing properties, and (of course) its well-known role in making CHOCOLATE!

Cocoa butter, like cocoa powder, comes from the bean of the cacao tree. When the beans are extracted from the cocoa fruit or pods, the beans are cleaned and roasted. The beans are then pressed, pushing out the cocoa butter. After the cocoa butter is extracted, the remaining solids are processed into cocoa powder. Cocoa butter + cocoa powder + sugar and milk = chocolate!

Benefits of Cocoa Butter

In soap, cocoa butter creates the smooth lather and moisturizing effect that everyone loves. Its also amazing for chapped skin, eczema, and stretch marks during pregnancy.

Why is cocoa butter so good for your skin?

1. Hydrates and nourishes skin

2. Improves skin elasticity

3. Holds in moisture by forming a protective barrier

4. Slows skin aging by protecting against the sun’s harmful UV rays

5. Smooths scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks

6. Heals rashes from conditions like eczema and dermatitis

How to use Cocoa Butter

You can rub one of our cocoa butter products on your skin or lips every day as part of your skin care regimen. Our cocoa butter products, combined with various essential oils and vitamins take your bathing experience from basic to spa-quality.

Our Geranium Patchouli products use cocoa butter + cocoa powder for double the chocolate! The luxurious satin texture in this soap makes it a crowd favorite.

Floral, sweet rose geranium + grounding earthy patchouli oils are an intoxicating pair. Geranium Patchouli Soap cleanses + detoxifies, prepping skin for exfoliation with Geranium Patchouli Body Scrub. Finally, massage luxurious hydrating Geranium Patchouli Body Lotion onto skin. Emerge from the bathroom glowing.
