Because who wants dry, itchy, and flaky skin? Here are some tips and tricks to maximize hydration and enrich your skin during these cold Winter months!

Having supple skin begins with the ingredients found in your products. Avoid harsh alcohols or over-processed ingredients and instead opt for natural and soothing butters or light oils. Our favorites to look for are cocoa butter, shea butter, Jojoba, and almond oil.
Work While You Sleep
Moisturizing while sleeping is perhaps the easiest way to care for your skin this winter. Grab your favorite lotion or oil (might we suggest any one of Etta+Billie’s hydrating body lotion or oil) and cozy socks before tucking yourself into bed. You’ll wake up to baby soft feet with little to no work!
If your hands are really needing some extra TLC from the harsh weather and constant hand-washing, sleep with some moisture-rich products and gloves. Might seem a bit ridiculous, but it is sure to get the job done. Who knows, you might just save some money from the heater now that you’re all bundled up!
Steam is your Friend!
Let steam be your best friend during these cold months. It opens up your pores to further absorb any moisturizing products. Apply product before you hit the shower to optimize hydration. Just don’t forget to also moisturize after you’re out!

The turn of a new year is always met with an onset of prompts and questions about one’s new year’s resolutions. While some goals are notoriously made to be broken, (such as that resolution to get in the gym everyday) there is something so special about creating goals for oneself to take on in the new year. Rather than honing in on individual goals, here are some simple but everyday habits to implement into your routine that will help bring some transformation to your new year:
Make. Your. Bed.
Sounds simple enough right? But how many of us simply forget or chose to bypass this step every morning? While the task might seem rather insignificant, the act of making your bed when getting up is proven to increase productivity and a feeling of accomplishment. Plus, it adds an additional neatness to any room, helping it to feel less cluttered and therefore promoting clarity of thought for the day. Don’t believe the hype? Check out this book titled “Make Your Bed: Little Things that can change your Life… And Maybe the World” to hear more about the significance of this small, but impactful task.
While trying to implement change and accomplishing goals can sometimes make us feel like there is no time to waste, there is actually a great benefit in slowing down. Whenever it is most convenient for your schedule, designate a time to pause everything for meditation and grounding. This healing practice can be as short as 2 minutes. Slowing down each day to meditate has proven to strengthen one’s mental health, focus, and reduce stress.
Avoid the Devices
This tip might be the most difficult of them all, but also one of the most valuable. I can speak for myself and say when it comes to the morning, I oftentimes reach for the phone before I even have my first thought of the day. It is a daily struggle to remind myself that the notifications on my phone are not as important as what is happening in real life. While it is not the most realistic for us to avoid devices for a majority of the day, try implementing a no-phone zone for the first 30 minutes to an hour of the morning. Our world is run by technology, we can say no to using it for the sacred beginnings of our day.
As we reflect on the Thanksgiving holiday, the E+B team shares what they are most grateful for during this season. What are you thankful for?
Sonia Leticia- Production+Operations Manager
“What I’m most grateful for this year is my little sister Samantha. She has been a huge supportive force for me this past year and I would be completely lost without her. We’re currently 3,000 miles apart but keep in touch every day and support each other through all kinds of ups and downs. I’m so grateful to have such a wonderful and inspiring human as my sister and best friend.”
Natasha Osmidoff- Studio Assistant
“I am thankful for my friends and family that not only lift me up but brighten up my days! I am also grateful for my ability to work and live in San Francisco! Oh – and I’m so thankful for my dog!!”
Jasmine Watt- Marketing Assistant
“This year I am thankful for my family. They are my closest friends and are always so supportive of me. Also, I am super grateful for my university and school-year. With it being my last year of college, I am especially thankful for the experiences and education I have received.”
Gianna Zamora- Production Assistant
“This time of year always provides a great deal of perspective for me when I look around and observe the close connections in my life. Of course I am grateful for my health, the privilege of living in a beautiful home in one of the dreamiest cities in the world, and the ability to nourish myself well. Beyond all of that though, I am most grateful for my family, my friends, my partner, the people who remain close even when there is physical distance between us. The family I was granted and the family I have chosen while on this wild ride of existence provide honest reflections of who I am and who I aspire to be. They are my guiding forces, my eternal heartbeat, and the love I receive from them is the most essential resource I have.”
Alana Rivera- CEO+Soap Maven
“I’m so thankful for my team and my small business community this year! After becoming a mom last year, things in my life changed dramatically (surprise, surprise!). Throughout everything, my team and my community helped ease the transition and offered so much support both personally and professionally. I’m so grateful to have them in my life!”
The holiday season can be quite a busy time as we attend gatherings, embark on our family traditions, or prepare gifts for our loved ones. Today is World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to bringing awareness to various mental health issues and the many resources that are available to those who need support. As we reflect on the importance of this day and the many ways we can care for ourselves, we decided to gather up a list of ways that you can both care for and check in with yourself. Whether you need a bubble bath, a good run to clear your head, or someone else to talk things through, know that self care is no selfish act. You matter and how you care for yourself matters.
Relax, Soak, & Unwind
After a long day, there’s nothing like coming home to unwind and soak yourself in a hot and steamy bath. To add some healing aromatics and moisture, include some drops of our hydrating Bath+Body oil. It is formulated with pure organic oils that restore and permeate the skin. The beauty of our oil is that its uses extend beyond the bath and can be used in a multitude of ways (check out our blog post on the many uses of our oil!). So grab a book, light some candles, put on your favorite playlist, or simply enjoy some peace and quiet while floating away.
Getting your body moving and heart rate pumping has consistently proven to be a great stress-reliever. Endorphins are those wonderful hormones that release during a workout that leave you with that feel-good high. Essentially, they exchange pain for pleasure in the body. So get creative and try a new workout class such as barre, boxing, or yoga. Even if you’re lacking the time or resources, there are plenty of free exercise tutorials available online that range anywhere from 20-60 minutes. You’re doing both your mind and body a favor by going out and getting active!
This healing practice has increasingly become more popular and accessible for all. Meditation has many great benefits such as increasing focus, improving the quality of one’s sleep, reducing stress and anxiety, and so much more. Don’t know where to begin? Headspace is a useful tool that makes meditation simple. The app offers hundreds of themed, guided meditations that can be included into any schedule. Beginning the day with the practice of mindfulness is useful for reducing distractions and increasing positivity. Meditation can be crafted into anyone’s schedule, and the best part is that it’s absolutely free!
It is totally okay to need care beyond what we can offer for ourselves. Seeking therapy is a great option for many if you can sneak it into your budget or time. You can get started by simply searching on https://www.findatherapist.com/ to find a therapist in your area that caters to your specific needs. We recognize that the option of therapy might not be realistic for everyone. If it is not practical for you, consider sharing with a trusted confidant, friend, or family member. There’s great healing that happens in community- we are all in this together :).
In our new series “Story Behind the Scent”, Alana Rivera, owner and soap maven of Etta+ Billie, will take us through a history behind our scented concoctions. Here, she will recall the foods, memories, and people that have helped bring them to life. This week, we are talking all things Grapefruit Cardamom!
Tell us about the inspiration behind this scent:
Grapefruit Cardamom was a melding of two flavors that I loved into something absolutely blissful.
My love of grapefruit began as a child. Every summer, I spent time at my Grandma Etta’s in Southern California. She would often serve me grapefruit in the morning and I came to love the way she would cut each section for me so I could scoop the tangy flesh into a bowl. Then, I would squeeze any remaining pulp to create “Grapefruit soup”. I was so hooked on this method that I would often refuse to eat grapefruit cut any other way.
My obsession with cardamom didn’t start until I was much older. My first cardamom experience was in Indian cooking and then in a variety of pastries. I loved how the flavor is both herbaceous and spicy. With fresh green notes as well as a warm coziness. Once I discovered it, I couldn’t get enough.
Using my cooking experience and food loves as inspiration, I combined these two scents together. They work in harmony with each other to create something sweet, tart, spicy, and fresh. This combination is one of my very first and still one of my favorites today.
What products does Etta+Billie carry with this scent?
Mother’s Day is in ten days! May 12th celebrates motherhood and the influence of mothers in our lives.
The old school Mother’s Day celebrated the Greek mother goddess Cybele. The modern-day Mother’s Day in the United States was started by peace activist Anna Jarvis who thought a day should be set aside for all mothers because she believed a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”.
So what should you get for the person who has done more for you than anyone?
Here are some ideas:

Christina Tosi is the chef, founder and owner of Milk Bar. After working in the kitchens of fine dining restaurants, Christina founded the dessert program at Momofuku, where she later created the concept for Milk Bar, resulting in a culinary empire of her own.
Milk Bar is known for its familiar yet unexpected desserts including Crack Pie®, the Compost Cookie®, “naked” layer cakes with unfrosted sides, and Cereal Milk Soft Serve, among other playful and craveable treats.
Christina is also a judge on the hit cooking competition series Masterchef and Masterchef Junior (on FOX), and was recently the subject of an episode of Chef’s Table, the Emmy-nominated docu-series on Netflix. Belinda Leong began her career as a pastry chef at Restaurant Gary Danko in San Francisco in 1999. After eight successful years, she left the restaurant for Europe to stage at some of the most esteemed restaurants and patisseries in Paris, Barcelona, and Copenhagen. After two years in Europe, Belinda returned to the Bay Area and became pastry chef at Manresa Restaurant, a two star Michelin Restaurant, in Los Gatos, California before opening b.Patisserie.
At her new bakery, which is co-owned by San Francisco Baking Institute co-founder Michel Suas, Leong offers everything from elegant layer cakes to a 10-hour apple tart to rustic butter cakes. Her signature item is the Breton pastry kougin amann—and if some New Yorkers notice a familiarity in the undulating top and flaky layers, it’s because Dominique Ansel also staged at Fouchon, though at the Paris location.
In Thailand, to eat is to eat rice. So, colloquially, when we say “kin khao” we mean “to eat” or “let’s eat,” – kinkhao.com
Born and raised in Bangkok, Pim took a circuitous route through the world of food–from writing, teaching, to jam making [ahem, award-winning jam making]–before finding her way back home to the food she grew up with. Longing for Thai food of richer quality and variety in the U.S. Pim is now on a mission to liberate her beloved Thai cuisine from the tyranny of peanut sauce. Kin Khao is her first (and hopefully not last) restaurant project.
Jessica Koslow started her daytime-only restaurant, Sqirl in 2011 and its been at the top of of the Best-of-LA lists ever since. She started with jams and has expanded to breakfast and lunch, including her popular rice bowls.
El Sur was started in 2012, by Marianne Despres, a classically trained chef with roots in Argentina and France. Upon graduating from the Cordon Bleu in Paris, she continued her culinary training in some of the world’s best kitchens including Potel et Chabot and the French Laundry.
After running a successful catering business in the Bay Area specializing in fine French cuisine, Marianne realized she most enjoyed cooking and sharing the food she grew up with, specifically the empanadas from her childhood. Marianne developed the recipes for El Sur’s empanadas using old-fashioned techniques and the finest local ingredients.
Most of our products have the delectable cocoa butter in it, loved for its smooth texture, sweet fragrance, moisturizing properties, and (of course) its well-known role in making CHOCOLATE!
Cocoa butter, like cocoa powder, comes from the bean of the cacao tree. When the beans are extracted from the cocoa fruit or pods, the beans are cleaned and roasted. The beans are then pressed, pushing out the cocoa butter. After the cocoa butter is extracted, the remaining solids are processed into cocoa powder. Cocoa butter + cocoa powder + sugar and milk = chocolate!
Benefits of Cocoa Butter
In soap, cocoa butter creates the smooth lather and moisturizing effect that everyone loves. Its also amazing for chapped skin, eczema, and stretch marks during pregnancy.
Why is cocoa butter so good for your skin?
1. Hydrates and nourishes skin
2. Improves skin elasticity
3. Holds in moisture by forming a protective barrier
4. Slows skin aging by protecting against the sun’s harmful UV rays
5. Smooths scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks
6. Heals rashes from conditions like eczema and dermatitis
How to use Cocoa Butter
You can rub one of our cocoa butter products on your skin or lips every day as part of your skin care regimen. Our cocoa butter products, combined with various essential oils and vitamins take your bathing experience from basic to spa-quality.
Our Geranium Patchouli products use cocoa butter + cocoa powder for double the chocolate! The luxurious satin texture in this soap makes it a crowd favorite.
Floral, sweet rose geranium + grounding earthy patchouli oils are an intoxicating pair. Geranium Patchouli Soap cleanses + detoxifies, prepping skin for exfoliation with Geranium Patchouli Body Scrub. Finally, massage luxurious hydrating Geranium Patchouli Body Lotion onto skin. Emerge from the bathroom glowing.
