How to Remix your Thanksgiving Leftovers

We’ve all been there. After the big day (Thanksgiving that is) and left with WAY too many leftovers. What do you do? Well luckily, we at E+B have curated a list of some snazzy ways to add some life into your Thanksgiving leftovers this year. Who knows, you just might be able to revive that turkey left in the oven a little too long!

Turkey Breakfast Tacos

Turkey for breakfast? Yes, utilizing Thanksgiving leftovers can start as early as Black Friday morning. These Turkey Breakfast Tacos will help you put a fun spin on your typical breakfast taco with the addition of sweet potato mash and turkey. Top with salsa for some added spice and flavor.

Turkey Croquettes

Grandma Billie was always sure to make turkey croquettes with her leftover Thanksgiving dishes. Combine mashed potatoes, stuffing, and of course, turkey to make soft and fluffy croquettes. Dip these in some warmed turkey gravy or that extra can of cranberry sauce you’ve got lying around.

Cornbread Stuffing Fried Rice

The beauty of using leftovers is in the ability to add different flavorings to create an entirely different dish. Everyone loves salty and savory fried rice, so why not add your stuffing, turkey, and roasted veggies to remix this classic

Broccoli Cheddar Curry Casserole

This is no ordinary casserole. Broccoli, cheddar cheese, curry, and chicken (but in this case, your leftover turkey) make for a warming and cozy dish packed with a punch of flavor, perfect for the cool fall weather.

Ultimate Thanksgiving Leftover Sandwich

Would it truly be a Thanksgiving Leftover compilation without the mention of the infamous leftover sandwich? This ultimate Thanksgiving Leftover Club incorporates the sweet addition of cran-mayo (cranberry sauce + mayo), bacon, and turkey. The best part? These sandwiches can be assembled and thrown into the oven to crisp, because who wants to dirty up the stove after the big day?

No Beard? No Problem! – Our beard+face oil has you covered

November is upon us, meaning that many have begun the ever-famous “No-Shave November” challenge that ceases grooming and shaving for the month. Regardless of your grooming preference for this season, there is no denying that the onset of the fall brings about colder weather and drier skin. Luckily, E+B has plenty of products that can help you combat the dryness of these cooler months. Our beard+face oil is formulated to be super rich in moisture and hydration. Don’t be fooled, this oil can totally be used by both those with and without beards!

Etta+Billie's Beard+Face oil

Antioxidant-rich black cumin seed oil and hydrating Abyssinian oil are combined to tone and soothe any part of the body. The beauty of this oil lies in its versatility- it can be used on beards, faces, and any other area that is needing some TLC.

Cuticles

Dry hands are no stranger to the fall and winter months. Nail beds can especially take a hit when hands are not moisturized. Rub some of our beard+oil before bed on those dry hands and cuticles to wake up with baby soft-skin in the morning.

Hair

Hair can especially take a hit during this time of year. Apply some of our oil on the ends of your hair before styling or rub into the scalp before you shampoo for a deep-oil treatment.

Face

Taking the time to add some extra moisture to your face during the cooler weather is crucial. Massage in some drops of our oil onto your face after a steamy shower for optimized absorption. Your skin will thank you!

World Mental Health Day: Some self-care practices

Today is World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to bringing awareness to various mental health issues and the many resources that are available to those who need support. As we reflect on the importance of this day and the many ways we can care for ourselves, we decided to gather up a list of ways that you can both care for and check in with yourself. Whether you need a bubble bath, a good run to clear your head, or someone else to talk things through, know that self care is no selfish act. You matter and how you care for yourself matters.

Relax, Soak, & Unwind

Geranium Patchouili Bath+Body oil with other bath essentials

After a long day, there’s nothing like coming home to unwind and soak yourself in a hot and steamy bath. To add some healing aromatics and moisture, include some drops of our hydrating Bath+Body oil. It is formulated with pure organic oils that restore and permeate the skin. The beauty of our oil is that its uses extend beyond the bath and can be used in a multitude of ways (check out our blog post on the many uses of our oil!). So grab a book, light some candles, put on your favorite playlist, or simply enjoy some peace and quiet while floating away.

Get Moving

Getting your body moving and heart rate pumping has consistently proven to be a great stress-reliever. Endorphins are those wonderful hormones that release during a workout that leave you with that feel-good high. Essentially, they exchange pain for pleasure in the body. So get creative and try a new workout class such as barre, boxing, or yoga. Even if you’re lacking the time or resources, there are plenty of free exercise tutorials available online that range anywhere from 20-60 minutes. You’re doing both your mind and body a favor by going out and getting active!

Meditation

Meditating arm

This healing practice has increasingly become more popular and accessible for all. Meditation has many great benefits such as increasing focus, improving the quality of one’s sleep, reducing stress and anxiety, and so much more. Don’t know where to begin? Headspace is a useful tool that makes meditation simple. The app offers hundreds of themed, guided meditations that can be included into any schedule. Beginning the day with the practice of mindfulness is useful for reducing distractions and increasing positivity. Meditation can be crafted into anyone’s schedule, and the best part is that it’s absolutely free!

Seek Therapy

It is totally okay to need care beyond what we can offer for ourselves. Seeking therapy is a great option for many if you can sneak it into your budget or time. You can get started by simply searching on https://www.findatherapist.com/ to find a therapist in your area that caters to your specific needs. We recognize that the option of therapy might not be realistic for everyone. If it is not practical for you, consider sharing with a trusted confidant, friend, or family member. There’s great healing that happens in community- we are all in this together :).

Our Favorite Side Dishes for the Fourth of July!

It’s that time of year that we celebrate the U-S-of-A with a big get-together, sunshine, cold beers, and a massive BBQ feast. I’ve polled the E+B Crew and some of our Maker pals to find out what some of their favorite side dishes are to accompany their hot dogs/burgers/ribs/tofu/chicken for Fourth of July!

Grilled Corn

Grilled Corn on the Cob - the perfect, and very classic, 4th of July side dish.

Sonia, Etta + Billie’s Production Manager, loves a classic Grilled Corn on the Cob. Check out a few techniques for the perfect butter worthy corn-on-the-cob over at Serious Eats.

Pasta Salad

Mediterranean Orzo Salad is a refreshing take on the classic pasta salad option.

I love Jasmine’s (E+B’s Studio Assistant) pick for her favorite side – a pasta salad. This Mediterranean Orzo Salad is the perfect blend of crunchy, salty, savory, and 100% satisfying. Plus, you can put most of it together ahead of time and mix in the tomatoes, cucumber, and fresh herbs right before serving.

Potato Salad

Chimichurri Potato Salad

I love potato salad but I’m not a mayo fan (except in deviled eggs, egg salad, and tuna – I know, that makes no sense) so I’m always drawn to tangy, herb-laced recipes like this Chimichurri Potato Salad from Salt & Lavender. Yum.

Coleslaw

Creamy tangy coleslaw is always a great BBQ side.
image from Inspired Taste

Our super talented maker pal, Angie Chua creator of Bobo Design Studio, thinks coleslaw is necessary at any grilled-meat based food celebration because it cuts the “richness and heaviness of BBQ”. Agreed, lady! Check out this recipe from Inspired Taste.

Cornbread

Sharon Zimmerman, the uber-talented metalsmith, wants a cheesy cornbread to accompany her BBQ favorites (chips and guacamole too!). I’m dying to try this recipe from Yotam Ottolenghi.

Ok, I hope this has given you a few ideas. Now I want to know, what’s your favorite 4th of July side dish?

Where to Go? What to Eat? in Bend, OR. with Root Adorned

This week we asked Root Adorned owner Erin Hasler a bit about her beautiful shop and some local tips when visiting Bend.

Root Adorned owner Erin Hasler inside of her Bend, Oregon shop.

Born and raised in Bend, Erin is honored to bring her unique perspective to the community that she so dearly loves. After facing breast cancer as a young mother and wife, Erin discovered a new zest for life. She sold her hand crafted jewelry line and sought out a new career that would enable her to travel the world, support artisans and connect to community. It was from this dream that RootAdorned was born. Erin is a firm believer that life is short and you shouldn’t waste a moment of our precious time on Earth.

Tell us a bit about your shop.

An inside look into Root Adorned, with plants hanging above and a variety of products carefully curated below.

“Root Adorned is a home goods experience that brings the very best treasures from around the world to your home. Our goal is to help you create the nest of your dreams. A home that feels like the perfect sanctuary to rest and revive. We believe that surrounding yourself with beauty has an incredible effect on the soul. Our homes should reflect the beauty that is within all of us; each as unique as the individuals we know and love.”

Moroccan blankets hanging on a wall, plants inside of artisan ceramics, stationary cards

“We scour the globe to find one of a kind treasures for your nest. Swoon worthy vintage Moroccan rugs that are patina’d with time and love, hand selected from deep within the souks and sure to be family heirlooms for generations to come. Vintage handiras, Moroccan wedding blankets crafted with love, intention and prayers for a beautiful life. House plants so stunning they double as art.”

What do you love most about your area and how long have you been located there?

The sun setting over an unpopulated field of trees and bushes.

“I’m a second generation Bendite, which is rare these days. I’ve lived in other cities but I always came home to the high desert. I am my happiest when I’m out in in nature and we’re so blessed to have a bounty of natural beauty around us in Bend.”

Is your area known for anything in particular?

A lake where people are swimming under a partially cloudy sky, a large mountain range sits snow-capped in the background.

“Bend, Oregon is an outdoor recreation mecca. We have some of the best trail systems, high mountain lakes, skiing and snowboarding, rock climbing, white water rafting and mountain biking. It’s also become a bit of a beer haven; last time I checked we had 32 local breweries! Although ironically, I’m allergic to gluten and can’t drink beer :).”

Describe your favorite places for food/drinks in your area:

My favorite restaurants/bars are:

Breakfast: Cafe Sintra in downtown for a delicious breakfast/brunch with a Portuguese influence. D&D for the local dive bar eggs & bacon.

Lunch: Sunny Yoga Kitchen!!! They’re our neighbors, but they’re also the best lunch spot in town and the sweetest women you could ever know!

DinnerJoolz for Lebanese with a delicious twist. Barrio for the best tacos and their Don Chipotle margarita. Spork for fantastic, globally inspired faire and the raddest ambience.

Drinks: Velvet in downtown Bend for fantastic cocktails, great ambience and it’s owned by a really awesome couple. D&D, it’s my favorite dive bar and the perfect place to have a low key drink with your friends.

Tips + Tricks: Spring Cleaning with the KonMari Method

The countdown for Spring Cleaning has begun. There is nothing that can make you feel as comfortable and joyful in your home as a little refreshment after a long winter inside. Maybe you have even experienced a warm day to open the windows and let some new air inside.

Speaking of joy, Marie Kondo of KonMarie.comis currently leading the charge in the effort to revitalize the home. If you haven’t heard of her, Marie Kondo is the best-selling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing.

The KonMari Method teaches you to ask a simple question when tidying up your house: Does this item spark joy? If not, get rid of it.

Here is what we have learned from the KonMari Method:

  1. Visualize Your Idea Life:What does your ideal lifestyle and living environment look like? Imagine how you would be living your life if money, time and resources were not an issue. List the goals that come to mind. Describe in detail how you envision your home to look after the end of your tidying journey.
  2. Tidy by Category:Rather than going room-by-room, tidy by category – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, miscellaneous items, and finally, sentimental items. Keep only those items that spark joy.
  3. Say Thank You:It is difficult to get rid of your possessions, but KonMari teaches that these possessions are stripped of their dignity when they go unused in a home. If it doesn’t speak to the heart, Marie Kondo teaches us to thank the item for its service, and then let it go.

Marie Kondo’s focus on joy has been a novelty and eye-opener to many people. She also has her own hit Netflix show: Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. So, if you don’t have the time/energy/concentration for the book, you can check it out there.

Happy tidying!
