How to Travel With Only a Carry-On Bag

Whether you’re traveling for business or vacation, airports and flying can be quite a process. Even seasoned travel veterans go to lengths to avoid any extra headaches when dealing with airports. One of the easiest ways to keep your air travel hassle-free is to downsize and fly with just one carry-on bag rather than checking your luggage. Sounds impossible? We’ve got your back with these travel tips.

Pack layers and outfits that can be mixed-and-matched. For your clothing, you’ll want to pack as few items as possible, but you also don’t want to be stuck wearing the same things every day. The easiest way to accomplish this is to pack a few basics with many layers that can be mixed-and-matched. For example, bring a pair of stylish sneakers that will be comfortable to walk around in all day but can also be worn with a sundress for a cute and comfortable daytime look. Or, pack a pair of black denim jeans that can be dressed up with heels for a night out or dressed down for a casual afternoon brunch. Include short- and long-sleeved tops that you can easily throw a flowy sweater over if it gets colder. You can also avoid packing extra (read: unnecessary) “just in case” items by checking the weather of where you will be traveling to ahead of time. Rain in the forecast? Throw a lightweight raincoat in your bag that can be worn over any outfit.

Plan on doing laundry. Though doing a load of laundry while on a business trip or vacation doesn’t sound fun, it can save you from ever having to pack “extra” clothes. If you’ll be traveling for 2 weeks, for example, and you do laundry once during your trip, you will only need to pack 1 week’s worth of clothing. Many larger hotels offer (or can suggest nearby) laundry services. If you are staying at an AirBnB or VRBO, look for one with a washer and dryer in the house or apartment. Staying with friends? Ask to do your laundry in their house or building, or seek recommendations for a nearby laundromat or dry cleaner.

Pack multi-purpose beauty products. By bringing products that can be used for multiple things, you can reduce the number of items you have to try and pack! For example, instead of packing individual bottles for your shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, consider buying a travel-sized product that can do all three! Or, bring a bath and body oil that can be used as a facial moisturizer, body lotion, and leave-in hair treatment. (Don’t forget to pack all toiletries in transparent bags and limit any liquid soaps or gels you are taking with you to under 3.4 ounces/100ml.)

Purchase what you need once you arrive at your destination. You may also want to consider waiting until you arrive at your destination to pick up smaller items rather than trying to pack them. If you’ll be flying to a tropical paradise, wait until you arrive to pick up your sunscreen. You can also easily find many beauty products at local drugstores, supermarkets, and pharmacies. Additionally, most hotels provide basic products for you such as soap, shampoo, and lotion. If you are renting an AirBnb or VBRO, consider calling ahead and asking your host if they keep your favorite item stocked.

Saving money is only one of the advantages to traveling light and not having to check a bag. You’ll never have to worry about the nightmare that is losing your luggage, nor will you have to waste time waiting at a baggage carousel after spending hours on an airplane!

Headed to Kauai anytime soon? If not, you should really consider it. I know I’m lucky to live only a 5-hour flight away! It’s a spectacular island with varying landscapes, beautiful beaches, unreal coastlines, and some good food. This was my second trip to the Garden Isle with my entire fam (mom, dad, sister, brother-in-law, and husband) and luckily we all like to eat. We generally cook at home but went out here and there for lunches and the occasional dinner. So my list is not extensive but gives you some great food and location highlights.

The transition out of vacation was hard but compiling a list of my favorite spots and foods has made it a teeny tiny bit better. Read on!

NORTH SHORE

Garden Island Chocolate – tours on Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Learn about a variety of tropical plants, how cocoa is cultivated and then taste about 20 different kinds of chocolate. Delightful rain or shine.

Kileaua Fish Market – delicious fresh fish in the form of burritos, tacos, salads and you can take pieces home to grill up (we did this one night and it was fantastic).

Kileaua Farmers Market – Kilauea Neighborhood Center – Keneke Rd off Kilauea Lighthouse Road, Thursdays from 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Palate Wine Bar & Market – Wonderful wine selection, salads, and flatbreads. Buzzing atmosphere with really warm service.

Foodland Super Market – solid poke (lots of options) and a great place to get groceries. They even have a natural foods section.

Wailua Shave Ice – ok, I didn’t actually make it to this place but have heard amazing things about it so I’m going to recommend it anyway.

Plane ride – get a spectacular view of the island.

Eat

The Right Slice – second outpost with a completely automated shop (ie pie is in vending machines). Sounds a bit nuts but it works. The Lilikoi Cheesecake and Chocolate Coconut Macaroon were my favs!

Kikuchi’s – solid kalua pork bun with pickled veggies and the chicken karaage was perfectly cooked.

5 Tips to Keep Skin Healthy this Winter

Anyone else experiencing some serious winter skin blues right now? I cannot believe how unhappy my skin has been lately. My lips are peeling, I’ve got super dry spots all over my face, my cuticles are brittle, and my skin generally looks sad. Winter can clearly wreak havoc on the skin. Going from windy, cold outdoor environments to overheated apartments and offices is a complete moisture killer. Add washing your hands about 1000x a day to keep flu and colds at bay and you’ve got a recipe for disaster skin. Ready to get skin back to happy and healthy? Me too! Read on for my top 5 winter skin tips!

  1. Layer it up.

    Just like you would when heading out the door to keep your body warm, you’re going to want to layer on the moisture to keep skin hydrated. An aesthetician once gave me this advice and it’s worked wonders for me in the past. I highly recommend doing a combination of lotion, oil/serum, and then a balm daily for body and face. 

  2. Exfoliate, but not too much.

    Help skin naturally rid itself of dead skin cells but don’t go overboard or you’ll just exacerbate the issue. 1-2 times a week, max! For the face, use something gentle like this or a konjac sponge (I am gaga over this one). For the body, a natural loofah sponge or an E+B scrub bar does the trick (bonus cocoa butter and shea butter will stay on the skin trapping some of that water on the skin). For the lips, try this super easy lip scrub recipe I developed.

  3. Don’t overdo it.

    I know it’s cold outside and there’s nothing like a hot shower or bath BUT that ultra hot water robs skin of its natural moisture. Which means you’re already starting off badly when you hop out of the shower. Keep the temp warm but not crazy hot.

  4. Re-apply, often.

    Bring hydrating balms and lotions with you and reapply as needed, especially after washing hands or removing gloves. Spritz skin with our room + body spray, then apply some skin balm to add even more moisture to your skin on the go. 

  5. Drink a lot of water!

    The heat of summer zaps skin of moisture from the inside out and so do heated homes, cars, and offices. Drinking cold water may not seem very appealing when it’s cold outside so try drinking hot/warm water with lemon or room temp water. Keep in mind that teas (yes, even herbal ones) and coffee, while warming and pretty awesome pick me ups, are also diuretics which means they cause your body to excrete more water (i.e. pee). Just up your water intake to combat dehydrating effects of those beverages.
